Risnjak, Built Around You

Risnjak is one of Croatia's quietest national parks — forested mountains in the Gorski Kotar region, a short drive from Rijeka, protected since 1953. It takes its name from the lynx ("ris" in Croatian) that still live in its forests. The park is the source of the Kupa River, which rises from a turquoise karst spring at its edge, and its highest point, Veliki Risnjak, reaches 1,528 metres.

Rather than a single fixed itinerary, this is a starting point for a private trip built around how you actually want to see it: a half-day or full-day hike from Rijeka, a stop on a longer route to Zagreb, or part of a wider Gorski Kotar itinerary. Tell us your dates and interests, and we'll plan the rest.

  • The Kupa River spring, a turquoise karst pool right at the park's edge
  • Veliki Risnjak, the park's highest peak at 1,528 metres
  • Quiet, well-marked forest trails with far fewer visitors than Croatia's better-known parks
  • Habitat for the Eurasian lynx the park is named after

Fit Risnjak into your trip

A Risnjak trip commonly takes one of a few shapes — we'll adapt any of these to your own dates and route:

  • A half-day or full-day hiking trip from Rijeka, focused on the Kupa River spring and lower trails
  • Combined with Rijeka and the Kvarner coast as part of a longer itinerary
  • A stop on a longer route between Zagreb and Istria, since Risnjak sits right along the way
  • Part of a wider Gorski Kotar itinerary, alongside the region's forests and smaller villages
