Pag is unlike any other Croatian island — the bura wind has scoured much of it into a bare, almost lunar landscape, in contrast to the pine-covered islands further south. That same wind carries sea salt onto the island's sparse grass, which is what gives Paški sir, the island's famous hard sheep's-milk cheese, its distinctive flavour. Pag is also known for its centuries-old lace-making tradition, recognised by UNESCO, and for Novalja and Zrće Beach, one of Croatia's best-known party destinations.
